COUNTERSINKING
Countersinking is a machining process that creates a conical hole in metal to allow a screw or bolt to sit flush, or slightly below, the surface of the surrounding material. Because the head of the part does not protrude above the surface, it creates a polished appearance, minimizes catching or scratching, and maximizes the structural strength and integrity of the final assembly.
The countersunk hole is wider at the top, or “major” diameter, and tapers down to a cylindrical hole with a “minor” diameter at the bottom. Typically, the angle of the taper, or countersink angle, is 90°; however, it can range from 60° to 120°, depending on the design and use of the component.

Countersinks can be formed or machined into sheet metal parts. Machined countersinks are made with a drill press, while formed countersinks are made with punch press tooling. The best option depends on the project and the part’s geometry.
THREADING
Threading is a machining process that creates helical (spiral) grooves on various types of metal. Threading enables the piece to be fastened to complimentary workpieces, providing a connection that is precise, secure, and can handle high loads and stressors.
No matter what kind of threading you desire, HSI Manufacturing can accomplish it. We house a variety of subtractive machining equipment to remove material from fasteners and components, resulting in internal and external threading that is cut to precise specifications and thread depths.
REAMING
Reaming is a metal cutting operation that precisely enlarges and finishes a previously drilled, bored or cast hole to a specific diameter with a high level of accuracy, tolerance, and a smooth surface finish.
Manufacturers adopt reamer machining because it is the best option due to its speed and low cost. CNC reaming can offer a better surface finish with its precision grinding capabilities, creating holes of specific sizes and accurate diameters.
Processes such as drilling and boring come before reaming metal as they must prepare the hole before reaming. A hole reamer is an ideal choice to consider whenever you need to hold tolerances tighter precisely -/+ 0.002″ or more on the hole diameter.
